The Future is Bright STEM and Trades Bootcamp

Students learned about overhead electrical work as well as having the opportunity to try on Personal Protective Equipment and climb onto a pole platform while harnessed

We recently held a Future is Bright STEM and Trades Bootcamp, partnering with Endeavour Energy (NSW) to empower high school girls to expand their career options.

Students in years 9 and 10 from Plumpton High School and Penrith Christian School had the opportunity to explore career paths in STEM and Trades through hands-on activities including virtual reality and drones. The girls also visited Endeavour Energy’s Hoxton Park Field Service Centre where they learned about the behind-the-scenes work of managing an extensive power grid across Western Sydney.

Students also participated in the following activities:

  • Pole Climb Activity – students will learn about overhead electrical work as well as have the opportunity to try on Personal Protective Equipment and climb onto a pole platform while harnessed (1m high)

  • Sustainability and Drones – students will learn about sustainability and innovative engineering projects plus have the opportunity to fly a drone

  • Virtual Reality – students will learn about how training is implemented using VR and will have the opportunity to experience VR

Key takeaways from the girls:

  • That gender doesn’t define your job

  • That even though it's a male-dominated career women can still do it

  • 100% of participants agreed that the bootcamp provided new insight into careers in STEM and trades

  • 91% of participants are interested in a career in STEM or trades after attending the bootcamp

Recognising the vital role of female mentors, students engaged with a dynamic panel of women working at Endeavour Energy in STEM and trades careers. Empowered by their insights, the girls were not only encouraged to take opportunities but also to embrace their authentic selves along the way.

The feedback we received from the girls revealed a powerful realisation: they discovered that their gender doesn’t have to dictate the career paths they pursue. This insight underscores the importance of breaking down barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Thank you to the team at Endeavour Energy for hosting another incredible bootcamp! We're excited to be running another bootcamp in July 2024. Interested? Learn more here.
